Karen grew up on a farm in northern Alberta that raised stock horses and spent a lot of time riding her little roan pony mare. While living in Calgary, she worked in some of the top hunter/jumper and dressage barns. This gave her the opportunity to work with some really fantastic horses and ponies and attend shows like HITS Thermal.
Dean grew up in the Crowsnest Pass and his introduction to horses came about after meeting Karen. He eventually purchased a lovely chestnut Selle Francais schoolmaster-type mare. She was an older mare and a great teacher, but unfortunately has since passed on.
Exeter Farm was founded in 2011 with the purchase of Alvesta Brianna (then a yearling) from Alvesta Farm in Jarvie, Alberta.
The focus of our small breeding program is on Section B Welsh ponies and British Riding Ponies. We breed for the hunter ring, but may have ponies that will excel in other areas as well.
Over the years, we have been asked about our farm name and prefix. Knowing that we are huge Harry Potter fans, some people have asked if Exeter was chosen because that is where JK Rowling went to college, however, we didn't know that when we chose the name.
The "Exeter" name comes from a trip to the British Isles back in 2010. We were searching for a farm name and prefix and just hadn't hit upon one that clicked for us. One day, about a year after our trip, "Exeter" popped into my head while I was waiting to pick up Dean from work . We both loved the name and I was sure we had driven right by this town while on our trip the previous year. Upon checking a map, we found it was Wroxeter we had driven by, not Exeter! However, by then we were both so in love with the Exeter name, that we kept it!
